2026 FGI Code for Planning and Design of Outpatient Settings
The 2026 FGI Code for Planning and Design of Outpatient Settings establishes the minimum requirements for the planning, design, and construction of a broad range of outpatient settings. Covered facility types include general and specialty medical clinics, imaging facilities, birth centers, urgent care centers, infusion centers, outpatient surgery facilities, freestanding emergency care facilities and rural emergency hospitals, endoscopy facilities, renal dialysis centers, outpatient behavioral and mental health facilities and crisis centers, rehabilitation therapy facilities, dental facilities, short-stay centers, sleep disorder centers, and mobile units.
Beginning with the 2026 edition, the FGI Codes contain only minimum requirements intended for adoption and enforcement. Explanatory material, advisory information, and best practices have been removed from the FGI Code and are available exclusively in the digital-only 2026 FGI Handbook for Planning and Design of Outpatient Settings. This distinction clearly separates enforceable requirements from supplemental guidance.
The 2026 FGI Outpatient Code incorporates significant revisions reflecting changes in outpatient care delivery, facility operations, and building systems. Updates to general project requirements improve the organization of provisions related to project planning, renovations, phased construction, and functional programs. Additional revisions address surfaces and furnishings, telecommunications infrastructure, water purification systems, and electrical, medical gas, and nurse call requirements.
New and expanded minimum requirements address short-stay centers, sleep disorder centers, behavioral health crisis centers, and hemodialysis water distribution systems. Requirements have also been clarified or expanded for birth centers, dental facilities, imaging facilities, rehabilitation therapy facilities, and mobile units.
The 2026 FGI Outpatient Code also incorporates the complete 2025 edition of ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170, establishing the minimum ventilation requirements for outpatient facilities within a single adopted resource.
